Things That Shouldn’t Be In Your Storage Unit

While you can store just about anything you want in a storage unit, from furniture to clothing to vehicles, there are a few exceptions to this rule that are put in place to ensure your own safety, the safety of your belongings and the safety of the storage unit itself.

  1. PerishablesPerhaps somewhat surprisingly, perishable items such as food (including pet food and cat litter!) are often overlooked. However, if small animals like rodents or other insects come into contact with these items, they could potentially go on to damage other items or even build nests. This could pose a health risk with all of the bacteria that these animals leave behind and could eventually go on to compromise the entire storage unit itself. Canned pet food that does not have a scent is okay to store in your unit.
  2. Hazardous MaterialThe term “hazardous material” often brings up a lot of questions. Always proceed with caution when it comes to storing anything potentially hazardous because this can be highly dangerous. If a fire broke out, for example, serious legal trouble could result. When in doubt, it is in your best interest to ask.

As a general rule, hazardous material includes anything that could cause extensive damage if it happened to spill or get damaged. Examples of hazardous material include corrosive, combustible, flammable or toxic items such as gasoline, compressed gas, filled propane tanks, kerosene, fertilizers and paint, to name only a few.

  3. Anything Illegal and Unregistered and Non-Operational Vehicles Stolen property, drugs and drug paraphernalia are strictly prohibited. You must legally own everything that you store in your storage unit, even if the item belongs to a family member.

Similarly, unregistered and non-operational vehicles can also not be stored in a storage unit – they must be registered in your name, and the registration must be current. You must also have your license and insurance.

  4. Explosives, Ammunition and FirearmsItems like explosives, firearms, ammunition, firecrackers and bombs are also strictly prohibited.
  5. Live AnimalsWhile this may seem like an obvious one, it is best to have our bases covered. Animals are never permitted in storage units, and this includes leaving your cat to spend a weekend getaway in your storage unit!

Always double check that everything you plan to store in your unit is permitted.
