Box Packing Tips

Have you ever wondered how some people seem to have a knack for effectively packing boxes and can comfortably fit more in a box than would ever seem possible? While it’s not exactly rocket science, there is a method to packing efficiently. Here are 5 tricks of the trade to making packing a cinch:

  1. Get the Right Boxes and SuppliesWhen it comes to properly packing moving boxes, the first thing you need to do is get the right type of boxes. Say “no” to the boxes you might find in your neighborhood supermarket since they aren’t nearly sturdy enough. What you need are double corrugated moving boxes. And when you’re buying moving boxes, don’t forget to pick up these important supplies:
    • Packing tape with tape dispenser
    • Scissors
    • Bubble wrap
    • Packing paper
    • Markers
  2. Fortify Base of Moving BoxesBefore you place the first item in a moving box, you need to reinforce it with tape…lots of it. If the base is not reinforced, you risk picking up a box and having its contents spill out from the bottom. After you’ve taped the bottom a few times, you’re ready to start packing.
  3. Create Interior FoundationPlace a soft layer at the bottom of your boxes using packing paper or bubble wrap. This creates a cushion that will reduce the chances of movement inside of the moving boxes. The shifting of items in a box is what causes most in-transit damage during a move.
  4. Heavy Stuff Go on the BottomPutting heavier items at the bottom of a box will do two things: first, it will ensure that there’s proper balance to the box, which will prevent it from toppling over in transit. Second, it will prevent lighter items from being crushed by the heavy items. The more balanced your moving boxes are, the easier they will be to carry.
  5. Fill Excess SpaceFill in any spaces with packing paper or bubble wrap. Along with the cushion at the bottom of a box, filling in the gaps will further prevent items from moving around during transit and reduce the risk of breakage.
  6. Seal it UpAfter packing your moving boxes, you’ll want to close them up and secure them with lots of tape, much like you did for the bottom. If you struggle to close the box and have to press down hard to close the flaps properly, that means your moving box is too full. Next, label your moving boxes so that you can easily find everything when you arrive in your new home.

Moving boxes are definitely a must when it comes to relocating, packing properly will set you up for a successful move.
